Migration

Released in 1995, Migration is Nitin Sawhney's second studio album and a seminal work in the development of the 'Asian Underground' sound. While his debut, Spirit Dance, touched on these themes, Migration solidified the fusion of Indian classical music, jazz, and the emerging trip-hop aesthetic of the mid-90s. The album is notable for its long-form compositions, particularly the nearly ten-minute title track, which serves as a manifesto for Sawhney's career-long exploration of identity and displacement. Recorded during a period of intense creative ferment in the UK electronic scene, the album eschews the aggressive tempos of jungle or techno in favor of a sophisticated, jazz-inflected downtempo.
