Mishaps Happening

Released in 2004 on Tru Thoughts, Mishaps Happening represents Will Holland's (Quantic) creative peak during his Brighton-based era. While his earlier work leaned more toward traditional trip-hop and funk, this album fully embraced a 'Future Jazz' aesthetic, blending live studio sessions with sophisticated sampling. The album is notable for its high-profile collaborations, most significantly with soul powerhouse Alice Russell and the legendary Spanky Wilson. Critics at the time, including those from AllMusic, praised Holland for his ability to make electronic music feel entirely organic and 'played.' The recording process involved heavy use of vintage outboard gear and tape machines, which accounts for the album's signature thick, saturated low end. It serves as a crucial document of the mid-2000s downtempo scene, standing alongside works by Bonobo and Zero 7 while maintaining a grittier, more funk-indebted edge that would eventually lead Holland toward his later explorations in Latin and Cumbia music.
