Mkutano

Released in 2005, Mkutano (Swahili for 'The Meeting') represents a pinnacle in Taj Mahal's career-long exploration of the African roots of the blues. Recorded in Zanzibar with the Culture Musical Club, a legendary Taarab orchestra, the album eschews the commercial polish of contemporary blues-rock for a raw, acoustic authenticity. The project was the result of a long-standing desire by Mahal to collaborate with East African musicians, specifically those within the Taarab tradition which blends Arabic, Indian, and African influences. The tracklist features re-imaginings of blues standards like 'Catfish Blues' alongside traditional Swahili compositions. Critically, the album was praised for its organic integration of disparate styles, avoiding the 'tourist' pitfalls of many cross-cultural collaborations.
