Modern Guilt

Released in 2008, Modern Guilt represents a pivotal moment in Beck's discography, marking the end of his long-standing contract with Interscope. Produced in collaboration with Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), the album is a departure from the sprawling, sample-heavy 'The Information' and the funk-infused 'Guero'. The recording process was famously intensive, with Beck and Burton attempting to condense years of songwriting into a ten-week sprint. The result is his shortest studio album, clocking in at just over 33 minutes. Sonically, it draws heavily from 1960s garage rock and baroque pop, characterized by dry drum sounds, keyboard bass, and psychedelic textures. The inclusion of Cat Power on 'Orphans' and 'Walls' adds a haunting, choral depth to the record.
