Monolithic Baby!

Released in 2004, Monolithic Baby! represents a pivotal moment for Monster Magnet as they transitioned away from the more experimental textures of God Says No (2000) back toward a harder, more direct stoner rock sound. This was the first album to feature bassist Jim Baglino, though drums were handled by session player Michael Wildwood before Bob Pantella joined the permanent lineup. The record is notable for its inclusion of three distinct covers - Unicorn, Robert Calvert, and The Velvet Underground - which highlight the band's diverse influences ranging from 70s country rock to proto-punk. A central piece of the album's history is 'Master of Light,' which was featured in the motorcycle action film Torque. Sonically, the album is characterized by Bob Marlette's polished yet heavy production, emphasizing a 'wall of sound' guitar approach that solidified Monster Magnet's status as the premier purveyors of 'sleaze rock' in the early 2000s.
