Motion

Released in 1999 on the influential Ninja Tune label, Motion served as the debut for Jason Swinscoe's The Cinematic Orchestra. The album's creation was a revolutionary process: Swinscoe recorded live jazz musicians improvising over his own sketches, then sampled, looped, and re-arranged those recordings into final compositions. This 'post-production jazz' approach allowed the album to bridge the gap between traditional jazz fusion and the burgeoning 'future jazz' or 'nu jazz' scenes of the late 90s. Critics from AllMusic and Exclaim! praised the record for its ability to evoke a cinematic atmosphere without relying on orchestral tropes, instead using texture and rhythm to build narrative. While later albums like 'Every Day' would lean into more expansive, soulful arrangements, Motion remains the project's most rhythmically driven and production-heavy statement.
