Movement

Released in November 1981, Movement serves as the bridge between the claustrophobic post-punk of Joy Division and the pioneering synth-pop of New Order's later 1980s output. Produced by Martin Hannett, the album is characterized by a dense, often murky sonic palette that reflects the band's grieving process following the suicide of Ian Curtis. While the band famously expressed dissatisfaction with Hannett's authoritarian production style, the resulting record is a unique fusion of live instrumentation and early electronic sequencing. It features a democratic approach to vocals, with Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner both taking leads as the band searched for a new identity. Tracks like 'ICB' (Ian Curtis Buried) and 'The Him' directly address their shared loss, while 'Dreams Never End' points toward the melodic indie-rock sensibilities they would later refine. Though initially met with lukewarm reviews, it has been retrospectively reclaimed as a coherent and essential document of post-punk's evolution into the digital age.
