Muffins

Muffins is the self-released debut EP by Hoobastank (then spelled Hoobustank), released in 1997. It represents a significant stylistic departure from the post-grunge and alternative rock sound that would later make them household names. At this stage, the band featured a full-time brass section, including Jeremy Wasser on saxophone, which heavily influenced their sound toward funk-rock and ska-core. The production is distinctly lo-fi and raw, capturing the energy of their live shows in the Greater Los Angeles area. Tracks like 'Pee Wee' and 'Invisible' showcase a technical proficiency in slap-bass and syncopated rhythms that would be simplified in later years. The EP also highlights a juvenile, prankster-heavy lyrical focus, typical of the SoCal skate-punk scene of the late 90s. While it remains a cult item for die-hard fans, it is a crucial piece of history for understanding the evolution of 2000s rock stars from their eclectic indie roots.
