Released in December 1971, Music served as the immediate successor to the monumental Tapestry. Recorded at A&M Studios with producer Lou Adler, the album features many of the same personnel, including guitarist Danny Kortchmar and bassist Charles Larkey. While often overshadowed by its predecessor's commercial shadow, Music is a sophisticated continuation of King's 'Laurel Canyon' sound. The record highlights her transition from a hit-making Brill Building songwriter to a definitive solo artist, showcasing a more jazz-inflected and soulful approach to her arrangements. Notably, the album features King playing the celeste and includes contributions from James Taylor. It reached number one on the Billboard 200, proving King's immense cultural grip at the time. The lyrical themes lean heavily into the complexities of long-term relationships and the physical/emotional pull of home, particularly on the standout closer 'Back to California.'
