Neroli

Released in 1993, Neroli (subtitled 'Thinking Music, Part IV') represents a pivotal moment in Brian Eno's exploration of generative music. Named after the essential oil derived from orange blossoms, the album was intended to function similarly to a scent: present in the air but not demanding active engagement. Sonically, it is a radical departure from the multi-layered textures of his 70s ambient work. It features a single synthesizer voice playing isolated notes in the Phrygian mode, a scale often associated with tension and mystery. The piece was created using a system of algorithmic rules, a technique Eno would later refine with his SPrEAD software. Critically, it is viewed as a masterclass in 'functional' music, often cited alongside 'Thursday Afternoon' as his most successful long-form minimalist experiment.
