NEUTRALITE

Released in 2007, NEUTRALITE represents a pivotal moment in Rich Vreeland's (Disasterpeace) early career. While his later work like the 'FEZ' soundtrack or 'It Follows' would lean into lush, reverb-soaked atmospheres, NEUTRALITE is much more aggressive and technically dense. It leans heavily into the 'progressive' tag, utilizing complex time signatures and shifting structures that owe as much to 70s prog-rock as they do to early Nintendo hardware. The album is notable for its use of digital artifacts and intentional glitching as rhythmic elements, a precursor to the 'bitcrushing' signature he would later refine. Critically, it is seen as a foundational text in the second wave of chiptune, moving the genre away from simple covers and towards original, high-concept electronic composition. It remains a fan favorite for its raw energy and the clear evidence of a singular voice beginning to master its tools.
