Night-Lines

Released in 1984 on GRP Records, Night-Lines is a cornerstone of the 'GRP sound' - a production aesthetic defined by early digital recording, extreme clarity, and a blend of acoustic and electronic instruments. Dave Grusin, a co-founder of the label, used this album to showcase the potential of the Yamaha DX7 and other then-new digital synthesizers within a jazz context. The album is notable for including the full version of his 'Theme from St. Elsewhere,' which became one of the most recognizable television themes of the decade. Musically, it bridges the gap between the jazz-funk of the late 70s and the emerging adult contemporary/smooth jazz radio format.
