Nightbook

Released in 2009, Nightbook represents a pivotal moment in Ludovico Einaudi's discography where he began to integrate live electronics and more varied instrumentation into his minimalist piano compositions. Inspired by the idea of a 'night-time journal' and the paintings of Anselm Kiefer, the album is darker and more experimental than its predecessor, Divenire. It features collaborations with the Robert Lippok of To Rococo Rot, whose subtle electronic processing adds a layer of 'glitchy' organic texture to the acoustic piano. The album is structured around the concept of a journey into the self, moving from the structured 'In principio' to the massive, improvisational 'The Planets'. Critically, it was noted for its ability to bridge the gap between contemporary classical and ambient electronic music, solidifying Einaudi's status as a cross-genre pioneer.
