Nightmares

Released in 2006, Nightmares is the debut studio album by Architects, recorded when the band members were still in their mid-teens. While later albums would see them pioneer a more melodic and atmospheric brand of metalcore, this record is firmly rooted in the technical mathcore tradition of bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge. Produced with a raw, almost demo-like grit, it showcases the early technical prowess of the late Tom Searle, whose guitar work here is characterized by dissonant tapping, jagged harmonics, and constant time-signature fluctuations. The album is notable for its lack of clean singing, a staple of their later work, featuring instead the raw, high-pitched screams of original vocalist Matt Johnson.
