No Control

Released in 1989, No Control is the fourth studio album by Bad Religion and a foundational pillar of the melodic hardcore subgenre. Following the success of Suffer, the band doubled down on their signature sound, increasing the tempo and refining their lyrical focus on evolutionary biology, sociology, and existentialism. Recorded at Westbeach Recorders, the album features the 'classic' lineup and is notable for its use of Aphex Systems processing, which guitarist Brett Gurewitz initially disliked but which contributed to the album's distinct, biting sonic character. It solidified the 'Epitaph sound' - a blend of high-speed D-beat drumming, melodic guitar leads, and complex vocal harmonies known as 'oozin' ahs.' The album is frequently cited by critics and fans as the band's creative peak, influencing a generation of skate punk and pop-punk bands. It remains a staple of their live sets, containing more fan favorites per square inch than almost any other record in their extensive catalog.
