North Dorm EP

Released in June 2010, the North Dorm EP serves as the formal introduction to Nathan Hull's project, Evenings. Emerging during the height of the chillwave and lo-fi movements, the EP distinguished itself through a more restrained, downtempo-focused approach that leaned heavily into tape saturation and sample manipulation. Unlike the more pop-oriented acts of the time, Evenings focused on the textural qualities of sound, using noise and hiss as essential compositional elements. The five tracks are characterized by their brevity and loop-based structures, echoing the influence of early Boards of Canada and the burgeoning lo-fi hip-hop scene. Despite its short runtime, the EP established the 'hazy memory' aesthetic that would define Hull's later work, particularly his acclaimed full-length Yume. It remains a foundational text for fans of dusty, instrumental electronic music, prized for its ability to evoke a specific sense of place and time through minimalist means.
