Oceans and Deserts

Released in 2002, Oceans and Deserts represents GANGgajang's return to the studio after a significant hiatus following their 1990s output. While the band is eternally associated with the surf-rock and new wave energy of the mid-80s, this fourth album showcases a more contemplative and sonically refined version of their 'Calypso-rock' aesthetic. The album was released on the independent Shock label, marking a shift away from major label constraints and allowing for a more experimental, thematic approach to the Australian landscape. Tracks like 'Time (And The Mandelbrot Set)' introduce intellectual and mathematical themes into their usual sensory-driven lyricism, while 'Nomadsland' reinforces their status as the preeminent chroniclers of Australian travel. Sonically, the album maintains the interlocking guitar work of Robbie James and Mark Callaghan, but with a 21st-century clarity that highlights the band's technical precision and collaborative chemistry.
