Orient & Occident

Released in 2002 on the ECM New Series label, Orient & Occident represents a pivotal moment in Arvo Pärt's later career where his signature tintinnabuli style began to incorporate more diverse cultural influences. The title track, 'Orient & Occident,' is a masterclass in his 'holy minimalist' approach, utilizing a string orchestra to bridge the gap between Western harmonic traditions and Eastern monophonic lines. The centerpiece of the album is 'Como cierva sedienta' (As the deer pants), a large-scale work for soprano and orchestra based on Psalms 42 and 43. This piece showcases a more dramatic, coloristic side of Pärt's writing, moving away from the extreme austerity of his 1970s work toward something more lush and emotionally resonant. Recorded with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir under Tõnu Kaljuste, the production captures the immense spatial depth and crystalline clarity that ECM is known for, making the silence between the notes as important as the notes themselves.
