Released in 1981, Party represents a significant stylistic shift for Iggy Pop as he moved toward a more commercial, New Wave-influenced sound. Following the experimental 'Berlin Trilogy' era, Iggy was under pressure from Arista Records to produce a hit. He collaborated with Ivan Kral (of the Patti Smith Group) to write a set of songs that were more melodic and structured than his previous output. The album was produced by Tommy Boyce, known for his work with The Monkees, which further emphasized the pop sensibilities of the project. Despite the label's push for a mainstream breakthrough, the album retains Iggy's idiosyncratic lyrical style, featuring absurdist imagery and a defiant attitude. The record includes notable covers such as 'Sea of Love' and 'Time Won't Let Me', showcasing Iggy's versatility as a vocalist.
