Passio

Passio (Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem) is a 1982 composition by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, with this 2003 Hilliard Ensemble recording standing as a definitive interpretation. It represents the peak of Pärt's 'tintinnabuli' period, a style he developed after a long period of silence and study of medieval plainchant. The work is a setting of the Gospel of John, chapters 18 and 19, scored for soloists, choir, and a small instrumental ensemble of organ, violin, oboe, cello, and bassoon. Unlike traditional Passions by Bach or Telemann, Pärt eschews dramatic word-painting in favor of a rigid, objective structure where the pitch and rhythm are determined by the punctuation and structure of the Latin text. The result is a work of 'holy minimalism' that feels both ancient and radically modern. Critically, it is regarded as a cornerstone of late 20th-century choral music, praised for its ability to evoke a sense of the eternal through extreme economy of means.
