Passionfruit Summers

Released in late 2017, Passionfruit Summers served as the definitive introduction to Amaarae and a foundational text for the emerging Alté scene in West Africa. While Amaarae would later become known for high-energy, genre-bending global hits, this debut EP is a much more subdued, psychedelic affair. It leans heavily into 'alternative R&B' tropes of the mid-2010s but distinguishes itself through Amaarae's unique vocal delivery - a high-pitched, breathy coo that functions as a melodic instrument. The project was recorded during a formative period between Accra and the US, reflecting a cross-cultural synthesis of neo-soul sensibilities and Ghanaian rhythmic undercurrents. Critically, it was praised for its sonic cohesion and for challenging the dominant Afrobeats sound of the era with something far more experimental and 'soft.' It remains a cult favorite for fans who prefer her more atmospheric, lo-fi beginnings.
