Pelotone

Released in 1996, Pelotone is a seminal EP by Female (Peter Sutton), a key figure in the development of the Birmingham techno sound alongside Regis and Surgeon. This record exemplifies the 'Downwards' label aesthetic: a rejection of the lush, melodic trance-techno of the era in favor of something much more brutal, skeletal, and industrial. The three tracks - Back Lash, Slave, and Division - are exercises in rhythmic minimalism, utilizing distorted drum machines and metallic loops to create a sense of relentless forward motion. While Sutton's work as Female often explored more experimental and ambient territories later in his career, Pelotone remains a foundational document of functional, hard-edged techno. Its influence can be heard in the modern 'industrial techno' revival, though few contemporary artists capture the same level of organic, analog decay present in these original recordings.
