Permanent Vacation

Released in 1987, Permanent Vacation represents one of the most successful commercial pivots in rock history. After the lukewarm reception of 1985's Done With Mirrors, Aerosmith embraced a new strategy: collaborating with professional outside songwriters like Desmond Child and Jim Vallance. This shift, overseen by producer Bruce Fairbairn, resulted in a sound that was significantly more 'radio-ready' than their previous work. The album produced three Top 20 hits and established the template for their subsequent multi-platinum successes, Pump and Get a Grip. Sonically, the record is notable for its use of the Fairlight CMI and digital recording techniques, which provided a crispness that contrasted with their earlier analog grit. Despite the pop polish, the band maintained their identity through Joe Perry's blues-inflected riffing and Tyler's signature vocal acrobatics. The inclusion of a Beatles cover ('I'm Down') and the experimental instrumental closer ('The Movie') showcase a band willing to take risks within a commercial framework.
