Petaluma

Released in 1972, Petaluma represents one of the most drastic stylistic pivots in 1970s rock history. Following the massive global success of 'Spirit in the Sky,' Norman Greenbaum retreated from the gritty, fuzz-drenched psychedelic rock that made him famous. He relocated to Petaluma, California, and recorded this album as a tribute to his new rural lifestyle. Produced by Erik Jacobsen, the record features members of the bluegrass group the Styx River Ferry, ensuring an authentic acoustic foundation. The album was a commercial failure at the time because it lacked a radio-friendly rock single, but it has since been rediscovered as a precursor to the modern Americana and freak-folk movements. It stands as a remarkably cohesive piece of work, eschewing all electronic amplification in favor of a pure, hand-played sound that remains a unique outlier in Greenbaum's discography.
