Commonly known as 'Melt' due to its iconic Hipgnosis cover art, Peter Gabriel's third self-titled solo album is a watershed moment in record production. Produced by Steve Lillywhite, the album is most famous for the 'gated reverb' drum sound discovered during the recording of 'Intruder,' a technique that would dominate 1980s pop. Gabriel famously forbade his drummers from using cymbals, forcing a focus on rhythmic patterns and stark tonal contrasts. This was also one of the first major releases to utilize the Fairlight CMI digital sampler, adding eerie, non-musical textures to the arrangements. Lyrically, the album explores themes of paranoia, social alienation, and political violence, culminating in 'Biko,' which became a global anthem for the anti-apartheid movement. It marked Gabriel's definitive break from his progressive rock past into a more rhythmic, avant-pop future.
