Phases and Stages

Released in 1974, Phases and Stages is one of the earliest and most successful concept albums in country music history. After the creative liberation of Shotgun Willie, Nelson moved to Muscle Shoals Sound Studios to record this song cycle about divorce. Produced by Jerry Wexler, the album features a sophisticated blend of country, soul, and jazz influences, largely due to the backing of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The record is famously divided into two halves: the first side tells the story of a marriage's end from the woman's perspective, while the second side focuses on the man. This narrative ambition was a radical departure from the 'Nashville Sound' of the era. Despite its high critical standing today, the album's moderate commercial performance led Atlantic Records to shutter its country division shortly after its release. It remains a cornerstone of the Outlaw Country movement and a testament to Nelson's idiosyncratic songwriting and phrasing.
