Piece of Cake

Released in 1992, Piece of Cake was Mudhoney's highly anticipated major label debut for Reprise Records. Despite the transition to a corporate giant, the band famously spent only $15,000 on the recording at Egg Studios, maintaining their lo-fi, garage-rock integrity. Produced by Conrad Uno, the album is notable for its inclusion of four experimental tracks where each band member was given full creative control, resulting in the short, untitled interludes and the instrumental 'Youth Body Expression Explosion.' Sonically, the album marked a slight departure through the prominent use of a vintage organ, which added a 1960s psychedelic garage flavor to their established fuzz-rock sound. While some contemporary critics at the Toronto Sun viewed its loose structure as a lack of effort, others like the Washington Post praised its 'contrary' nature in a landscape of increasingly polished grunge. It remains a pivotal document of the era, proving that the 'Seattle sound' was at its best when it remained unwashed and cynical.
