Released in early 2014, Play is the debut EP from the Philadelphia duo Marian Hill. It immediately established their signature sound: a minimalist blend of electronic production and jazz-influenced songwriting. The project was largely a product of the duo's long-standing creative partnership, having met in high school. The track 'Whisky' became an early viral hit, showcasing their ability to pair traditional bluesy themes with modern, stuttering beats. The EP's success was a precursor to their mainstream breakthrough when 'Down' (from a later project) was featured in an Apple commercial, but Play remains the purest distillation of their 'less is more' philosophy. Critics noted the project's sophisticated use of vocal manipulation, where Lloyd treats Gongol's voice as a MIDI instrument, chopping and looping syllables to create hooks that feel both alien and deeply soulful. It remains a cornerstone of the nu-jazz and downtempo revival of the mid-2010s.
