Pleading the Blues

Recorded on Halloween in 1979 at Condorcet Studio in Toulouse, France, Pleading the Blues is a significant entry in the collaborative discography of Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. The session was remarkably prolific; the band recorded thirteen tracks in a single day, which were split into two albums: The Blues Giant (credited to Guy) and Pleading the Blues (credited to Wells, though Guy's guitar is the primary melodic engine). The session was produced by Didier Tricard, who founded the Isabel label specifically to release these recordings - naming it after Buddy Guy's mother. While Wells takes the vocal lead on most tracks, the album is widely regarded as some of Buddy Guy's most tasteful and disciplined studio work. The tracks are notably long for the era, allowing the musicians to stretch out into slow-burn grooves that emphasize mood over technical flash.
