Primer

Primer serves as the North American debut for Rockapella, though it was their sixth album overall. Unlike their previous Japanese releases which featured more elaborate studio production, Primer was designed to capture the raw, kinetic energy of their live stage show. Recorded at Sonalysts Studios in Connecticut, the sessions were remarkably brief, spanning only two days. This 'live-in-studio' approach resulted in a dry, intimate soundstage where the vocal percussion of Jeff Thacher and the foundational bass of Barry Carl are given center stage. The tracklist is a mix of original compositions like 'Falling Over You' and high-energy covers such as 'Zombie Jamboree' and 'Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.' Most notably, it includes the definitive studio version of their theme for 'Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?', which had already become a cultural touchstone. The album is a pivotal bridge between traditional barbershop roots and the contemporary 'vocal band' movement.
