Primitive

Released in 2000, Primitive is Soulfly's second studio album and stands as their most commercially successful effort. Following the departure of Roy Mayorga, drummer Joe Nunez joined Max Cavalera to lean further into the 'tribal' metal sound established on their debut. The album is notable for its heavy integration of nu-metal elements, including turntable scratching and hip-hop-influenced vocal cadences, which were prominent in the metal scene at the time. It features a staggering array of guests, from Corey Taylor (Slipknot) and Chino Moreno (Deftones) to the surprising inclusion of Sean Lennon. Produced by Toby Wright, the record maintains a dense, aggressive wall of sound while allowing for experimental detours into sitar-led psychedelia and dub-influenced instrumentals. The artwork by Neville Garrick, famous for his work with Bob Marley, underscores the album's themes of resistance and spiritual heritage.
