Released in 1983, Pyromania is the definitive bridge between the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the polished 'hair metal' era that would dominate the decade. Produced by Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, the album is legendary for its obsessive production cycle, which lasted over a year and pushed analog tape technology to its physical breaking point. Lange’s technique involved layering dozens of vocal tracks to create a 'wall of vocals' and using Fairlight CMI samplers to augment drum sounds, resulting in a sonic clarity that was unprecedented for rock music at the time. The album marked the debut of guitarist Phil Collen, whose melodic sensibility complemented the existing riffs of Pete Willis. Critically and commercially, it was a juggernaut, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earning Diamond certification.
