Queens of the Summer Hotel

Queens of the Summer Hotel is Aimee Mann's tenth studio album, born from a commissioned musical adaptation of Susanna Kaysen’s memoir 'Girl, Interrupted'. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted the stage production, Mann moved forward with the material as a standalone song cycle. Sonically, it represents a departure from her more guitar-driven indie-rock roots, leaning fully into the chamber pop and baroque pop influences that have colored her work since 'Magnolia'. Produced by Paul Bryan, the album features lush, sophisticated arrangements of strings and woodwinds that evoke the 1960s setting of the source material. Lyrically, Mann tackles heavy themes of suicide, institutionalization, and the gendered expectations of the mid-century with her trademark sardonic wit and psychological precision.
