Remission

Released in 2002 via Relapse Records, Remission serves as the foundational full-length statement for Mastodon. While later albums like Leviathan and Crack the Skye would embrace strict conceptual narratives, Remission is more thematic, centered loosely on the element of fire. This is reflected in the Paul Romano cover art, inspired by a tragic dream of drummer Brann Dailor. Sonically, the album is a cornerstone of the early 2000s American sludge scene, blending the crushing weight of Neurosis with a technical proficiency influenced by jazz and thrash. It features the band's original raw vocal style, primarily handled by Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds with a more abrasive, hardcore-adjacent delivery. The inclusion of the 'Crusher Destroyer' Jurassic Park sample and the instrumental closer 'Elephant Man' showcases the band's early penchant for cinematic and experimental flourishes within a heavy framework.
