Renaissance

Released in 2016, Renaissance is the second studio album by Polyphia and marks a significant departure from the heavier, more aggressive sound of their debut, Muse. While still retaining the technical 'shred' DNA, the album prioritizes clean guitar tones and pop-centric melodic structures. This shift was intentional, as the band sought to distance themselves from the metal scene and create music that was more 'catchy' and 'relatable' without sacrificing complexity. The production is exceptionally clean, emphasizing the separation between Tim Henson and Scott LePage's interlocking guitar parts. This record laid the groundwork for their later, more trap-influenced sound, though here the rhythms remain more rooted in traditional prog and math rock. It was met with praise for its innovation in the instrumental rock space, specifically for proving that technical guitar music could be bright, fun, and aesthetically 'pretty' rather than just dark or impressive.
