Renegade

Released in 2000, Renegade marks a significant stylistic evolution for HammerFall, moving away from the high-speed 'speed metal' influences of their first two records toward a more traditional, mid-tempo heavy metal sound. This shift was bolstered by the recruitment of legendary producer Michael Wagener (known for his work with Accept and Skid Row) and the arrival of drummer Anders Johansson. The album reached number one on the Swedish charts, cementing the band's status as leaders of the traditional metal resurgence. Co-written in part by Jesper Strömblad of In Flames, the songs prioritize anthemic structures and 'gang' vocal harmonies over raw technicality. Critics often note this album as the moment HammerFall fully embraced their 'stadium metal' identity, trading some of their underground grit for a world-class production value that defined the genre's sound at the turn of the millennium.
