RIDE ON TIME

Released in September 1980, Ride on Time marks the commercial breakthrough of Tatsuro Yamashita and remains a cornerstone of the City Pop movement. Following several years of critical acclaim but modest sales, the title track’s inclusion in a Maxell cassette tape advertisement propelled Yamashita to superstardom. The album features his signature 'one-man vocal choir' technique, where he painstakingly overdubbed his own voice to create rich, orchestral harmonies. Musically, it is a sophisticated blend of American R&B, funk, and soft rock, filtered through a distinctly Japanese urban lens. The recording features top-tier session musicians, resulting in a tight, hi-fi sound that set new standards for Japanese pop production. Beyond the hits, the album includes 'My Sugar Babe', a tribute to his former band, and 'The Door into Summer', inspired by Robert A. Heinlein’s sci-fi novel. This record solidified Yamashita's reputation as a perfectionist producer and the 'King of City Pop'.
