Romantic Works

Released as a surprise on June 16, 2014, Romantic Works represents a significant pivot for Keaton Henson, moving from his established fragile folk-rock into what he termed 'bedroom classical.' Recorded entirely in his own living space, the album strips away his signature tremulous vocals to focus on instrumental storytelling. The collaboration with cellist Ren Ford is central to the album's identity, providing a rich, mournful texture to Henson's minimalist piano compositions. Influenced by the holy minimalism of Arvo Pärt and the repetitive structures of Philip Glass, the record explores themes of mental health and emotional exhaustion through a wordless lens. It was notably premiered via a stream on The Guardian, bypassing traditional promotional cycles, which mirrored the introverted nature of the music itself. The album has since become a cult favorite within the contemporary classical and ambient communities for its raw, unpolished intimacy.
