Released in 1998, Ronroco is the definitive solo statement from Gustavo Santaolalla, recorded over several years as a personal project rather than a commercial endeavor. It serves as the bridge between his roots in Argentine rock and his later career as an Academy Award-winning film composer. The album centers on the ronroco, a larger, deeper-toned relative of the charango. By applying a minimalist, almost ambient approach to this traditional instrument, Santaolalla created a new sonic vocabulary that would later define the 'modern western' aesthetic of films like Brokeback Mountain and the video game The Last of Us. Tracks like 'Iguazu' and 'De Ushuaia a la Quiaca' have become iconic, frequently licensed for their ability to evoke deep emotional resonance with very few notes.
