Roxy Music

Released in June 1972, Roxy Music's self-titled debut is a foundational text of art rock and glam. Produced by King Crimson lyricist Peter Sinfield, the album was recorded in just two weeks, capturing a unique tension between the band's disparate influences. Bryan Ferry brought a fascination with 1950s Americana and soul, while Brian Eno (credited with 'treatments') introduced avant-garde electronic manipulation via the VCS3 synthesizer. The interplay between Andy Mackay's classical woodwinds and Phil Manzanera's versatile guitar work created a sonic palette that was entirely alien to the prevailing blues-rock trends of the era. The album reached number 10 in the UK, propelled by the band's striking visual aesthetic and the non-album single 'Virginia Plain' (later added to US pressings). It remains a rare example of a debut that arrives with a fully formed, revolutionary identity, influencing everything from punk to the New Romantic movement.
