Released in 1976, Sad Wings of Destiny is widely regarded as the album where Judas Priest - and by extension, heavy metal - truly came into focus. While their debut, Rocka Rolla, leaned heavily on blues-rock and psychedelic tropes, Sad Wings introduced the sophisticated twin-guitar harmonies and operatic vocal delivery that would become the genre's standard. Recorded under financial duress for the struggling Gull Records, the album features a high degree of technical proficiency and structural ambition, drawing from progressive rock as much as hard rock. The centerpiece, 'Victim of Changes,' is a composite of two different songs that showcases the band's ability to navigate complex tempo shifts and emotional dynamics. Despite its lack of commercial success at the time, the album's influence is immeasurable, providing the DNA for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
