Saliva

Released in 1997 on the local Rockingchair Records, Saliva's self-titled debut is a foundational document of the Memphis hard rock scene. While the band would later achieve multi-platinum success with a more polished post-grunge sound on Island Records, this independent release captures them in a much rawer state. Recorded at Rockingchair Recording Studios, the album features a heavy emphasis on the 'nu-metal' elements that were then emerging - specifically the fusion of syncopated, drop-tuned guitar riffs and rhythmic, rap-influenced vocal cadences. Tracks like 'Beg' and 'Spitshine' showcase a band experimenting with dynamics, moving from quiet, tension-filled verses to explosive choruses. The production is notably more analog and less compressed than their later work, allowing for a grittier sonic texture. Critically, it is viewed as a cult classic within the genre, representing the bridge between the experimentalism of early Tool or Faith No More and the commercial juggernaut nu-metal would become by the turn of the millennium.
