Saluting Sgt. Pepper

Released in 2017 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' seminal work, Saluting Sgt. Pepper finds British jazz polymath Django Bates and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band (hr-Bigband) deconstructing and reassembling the entire album. Bates, known for his work with Loose Tubes and his own Eggs and Basket Fruit Salad, brings his signature 'restless' style to the project, utilizing complex polyrhythms and dense, orchestral-jazz textures. Unlike many jazz tributes that simply apply a swing beat to pop melodies, Bates treats the source material as a springboard for avant-garde exploration. The recording features the Eggs and Basket Fruit Salad trio alongside the big band, creating a unique hybrid of small-group intimacy and large-ensemble power. Critical reception highlighted Bates' ability to maintain the psychedelic 'Englishness' of the original while pushing it into entirely new harmonic territories, particularly on tracks like 'Within You Without You' and the climactic 'A Day In The Life'.
