Released in 1970, Sit Down Old Friend represents the most radical pivot in Dion DiMucci's storied career. Following his successful 1968 comeback with 'Abraham, Martin and John,' Dion eschewed the expected pop-rock trajectory to record a purely acoustic, spiritual folk album. Influenced by his recent conversion to Christianity and his mastery of classical guitar, the album features Dion alone with his instrument. The production is famously minimalist, reportedly recorded with very few takes to preserve the raw, immediate quality of the performances. While it confused fans expecting 'The Wanderer,' it has since been recognized as a masterpiece of the singer-songwriter era, predating the 'unplugged' trend by decades.
