Slania

Released in 2008, Slania is the sophomore effort from Swiss outfit Eluveitie and the record that catapulted them to the forefront of the international metal scene. Following their debut 'Spirit', this album refined their 'Pure Authentic Folk Metal' mission statement by integrating eight traditional folk musicians into a core melodic death metal framework. The album is notable for its use of the extinct Gaulish language and its heavy reliance on the hurdy-gurdy as a primary melodic instrument, a rarity in the genre. Central to its success is the track 'Inis Mona', which adapts the Breton melody 'Tri Martolod' into a metal context, becoming one of the most recognizable songs in folk metal history. Recorded at Fascination Street Studios with producer Jens Bogren, the album boasts a high-fidelity, polished sound that highlights the intricate interplay between acoustic whistles, mandolas, and aggressive harsh vocals.
