Solar is the debut full-length studio album by Taeyang, released in 2010 following the massive success of his 'Hot' EP. While his earlier work established him as a solo force within the K-pop landscape, Solar solidified his identity as a dedicated R&B artist. The album was released in several editions, including a 'Deluxe Edition' that became the first K-pop album to be sold worldwide on iTunes, peaking at number two on the US iTunes R&B/Soul chart. Sonically, the album is a masterclass in 'urban' production of the era, heavily influenced by US producers like Teddy Park and Choice37. It moves away from the more aggressive electronic trends of 2010, opting instead for a smoother, piano-and-synth-driven sound. The inclusion of tracks like 'Wedding Dress' and 'I Need a Girl' provided a dualistic view of his artistry: one side tragic and cinematic, the other lighthearted and melodic. Critically, it is regarded as a foundational text for the R&B genre within the Korean music industry.
