Solid Gold

Released in 1981, Solid Gold is the second studio album by Gang of Four and represents the peak of their 'skeletal funk' period. Following their debut Entertainment!, this record doubled down on the dry, airless production style that would influence decades of dance-punk and indie rock. Recorded in 1980, the album features re-recordings of live favorites like 'Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time,' emphasizing a more rigid, mechanical precision than their earlier versions. Andy Gill’s guitar work here is legendary for its complete rejection of blues-based soloing, opting instead for rhythmic 'stabs' and feedback. Lyrically, Jon King and Gill utilize a detached, sociological perspective to critique consumerism, domesticity, and state control. Critics often cite this as a more difficult, less 'pop' follow-up to their debut, yet one that solidified their status as the premier intellectual force in British post-punk.
