Soundtracks for the Blind

Released in 1996 as a double-CD set, Soundtracks for the Blind was intended as Swans' final statement before a fourteen-year hiatus. Frontman Michael Gira constructed the album as a 'soundtrack for a non-existent film,' utilizing a vast archive of recordings dating back to 1981. This includes vocal loops by Jarboe, FBI surveillance tapes from her father's desk, and interviews with Gira's own father. Sonically, it is the band's most diverse work, bridging the gap between their early industrial brutality, their mid-period gothic folk, and the epic post-rock structures they would later perfect. The album is notable for its 'cross-faded' temporal nature, where recordings from different decades play simultaneously. Critics have universally hailed it as a masterpiece of experimental music, noting its ability to balance horror and epiphany.
