Released in 2011, Sparta is a collaborative project between the legendary Brooklyn duo M.O.P. (Mash Out Posse) and the German production team Snowgoons. Coming late in the duo's discography, the album serves as a potent reminder of their 'First Family' status in the hardcore hip-hop scene. Unlike their earlier work with DJ Premier which leaned into soulful but gritty samples, the Snowgoons production here introduces a more cinematic, often orchestral and industrial texture that perfectly complements the duo's trademark shouting. The album is notably concise at ten tracks, eschewing the filler often found in 2010s rap releases. It was well-received by underground enthusiasts for its refusal to modernize or soften the M.O.P. brand, maintaining a 5/5 energy level from start to finish. It stands as one of the most successful cross-continental collaborations in underground hip-hop, blending US street lyricism with European 'heavy' production aesthetics.
