Released in 1994, Sperm represents a pivotal shift for Oomph!, moving away from the pure EBM/Electronic sound of their debut toward the guitar-heavy style that would eventually be dubbed Neue Deutsche Härte (NDH). While their peers like Rammstein would later find global fame with this formula, Sperm is the raw blueprint. The album is notable for its bilingual approach, featuring lyrics in both German and English, and its bold confrontation of religious and social taboos, particularly on tracks like 'Feiert das Kreuz'. Sonically, it is characterized by the 'Oomph! beat' - a specific syncopation between the drum machine and the bass guitar. It remains a landmark of the European industrial scene, bridging the gap between the dancefloor-oriented industrial of the 80s and the stadium-sized metal of the late 90s.
